Project X clays unique properties include greater density than other metal clays and the ability to solder to sterling silver findings. Try combining your clay designs with other Halstead components to increase design possibilities and save time in the studio. Metal clay is ideal for making small, sculptural multiples. You can easily solder on drop or link rings to convert your designs into jewelry components.
- Cannot be shipped to the United Kingdom
- See Media section below for instructions, product comparison, and more info. Read all instructions before experimenting with metal clay.
- Expect 20%-28% variable shrinkage at firing. Exact shrinkage will vary depending on firing temperature and duration.
- Due to variable shrinkage, clay is not recommended for rings or bracelets that will require precise sizing.
- Clay is firm when taken out of the package. Before shaping, condition clay by rolling out, folding over, and re-rolling a few times to soften. Flex clays will be even firmer than standard.
- You can spritz water on clay to achieve desired consistency after conditioning.
- Clay should be used within 9 months - 1 year for optimal performance. Crumbly old or overworked clay can be rehydrated with EHSPX1 rehydration fluid to reactivate binding agents.
- Recommended minimum thickness: .5mm for earring components, 1mm - 1.5mm for items requiring greater strength & durability.
- All Project X Silver Clays are compatible with soldered sterling silver attachments. Solder only on magnesia. Heat reflective surfaces may melt silver clay during soldering. Normal pickling and finishing will be required to remove oxidation after soldering.
- After firing, clay will appear white. Scrub gently with a soft brass brush to bring out silver shine.
.999 Silver Clay
.999 clay can be torch fired on a Metal Clay Firing Brick – see below.
Do not fire on solderite, honeycomb, charcoal, or ceramic or the heat intensity may melt your design.
.999 clay is compatible with enamels and keum-boo
.999 clay does not fuse well after firing. Instead, use silver solder for connections. Pickle to remove oxidation at solder joints.
.999 clay is the bestselling Project X product. Standard or Flex is a matter of personal preference. Flex is generally more popular.
Flex Clay notes:
Flex clays have higher moisture retention and longer working time. Bendable after air drying but firm once heat dried as described below.
Flex clays must be heat dried for 10-30 minutes at about 300 degrees F prior to firing or clay will bubble. Oven, hot plate, or toaster oven will work fine.
