Did you know that antique gimmel rings later inspired modern stackable rings? A gimmel ring (latin word for gemellus meaning twin) consists of two bands that interlock allowing the ring to be in two different pieces. They were used in marriages. When a couple became engaged the ring would be separated and the bride and groom would each receive one half. On their wedding day, the rings were brought back together to form one complete ring. The bride would then wear that one. The first gimmel band ever found was dated from 1350 and resides in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
